Upper Mustang

The ancient kingdom of Lo isolated in the heart of the Himalaya offers an imposing site: a sulfurous colored mineral chaos sprinkled with a succession of gorges, canyons with gullied cliffs scarring barren plateaus. The mountains eroded by the rainfall, the wind, the sun and the frost landscape sandstone pillars and discontinuous moraine terraces, which together present a colorful mosaic made up of earthen reds, yellows and brown. In this wild lunar landscape of unreal color and beauty, ruggedly carved mountains reach up to deep blue skies, while icy peaks glimmer majestically to the south. Vast and barren ridges extend to the northern horizon making one feel like an insignificant dot on a timeless landscape.

Between Annapurna and Tibetan plateau, from Jomsom at the bottom of majestic Nilgiri to L o Mantang, capital of this mythical and mystical ancient kingdom, it is an easy trekking not going higher than 4100m.

The thousands years of isolation has kept the culture, lifestyle and heritage remain unchanged for centuries and to this date. The houses in Mustang are mostly made from stone and sun baked mud bricks. The city wall and the four storey palace in Lo-Manthang are some of the beautiful architectures of Mustang region.
