The Rolwaling Valley
Tsho Rolpa is one of the Biggest Glacier Lake of Nepal which is under the Conservation Project of “Gaurisankar Conservation Area Project (GCAP)” and is managed by National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC). In Sherpa language “Tsho” means Lake, and “Rolpa” as a Rolwaling valley is located at an altitude of 4580M in the Dolakha district. It is also believed that the lake has grown considerable over the last 5 decades due to the glacial melting or Global warming in the Himalayas. The name Rolwaling means, ‘valley carved by a plough’ and its steep cliffs do indeed give the impression of a plough-carved furrow.
4 October, 2021 – Kathmandu-Chet Chet on bus – 9 hrs and Trek to Simi Gaon 2 hrs trek
Woke up around 530 and I was excited and ready for my awaited trek to Tso Rolpa. I moved on for the bus station and hopped on for a 9 hours bus ride to Chet chet. The bus left at 6 from and It took around 9 hours to reach Chet Chet. Once in Chetcet it was slightly drizzling though we put on our rain gear and started trekking to Simigaon after crossing the big suspension bridge at Chet Chet over the beautiful Upper Tamakoshi river. After two hours of walking we finally reached Simigaon. Checked in to local homestay where we enjoyed typical nepali dinner. Simigaon is at about 2200m altitude and is so beautiful with green farm terraces.
5 October, 2021 – Trek Simigaon – Surmuche – Kyalche – Dongang (5 ½ hrs)
Early in the morning, we had leisurely tea and breakfast. Then, started walking to Kyalche. The trail from Simigaon to Kyalche was pretty uphill and was through a dense jungle. We could slilghtly see Mt. Gaurishankar from the trail. We took a short water break in Surmuche(2470m) and further climbed to Kyalche. It was around 1 and half hours walk to Kyalche(2760m) where we had typical Nepali Lunch at the local lodge.
After the lunch we trekked further to Dongang(2800m). The route until Dongang is full of long and beautiful waterfalls. Dongang was a two-hotel town by the riverside. We arrived Dongang at around 1400 hrs. And we spent rest of our day with soaking on the mild sun with tea and coffee by the riverside.
6 October, 2021 – Trek Dongang – Beding – Na Village – 7 hrs Trek
The next morning, woke up at around 7 AM. We had our breakfast and we started trekking uphill to Beding Village. The trek on this day was calm with few steep uphill. Today we got the day’s first glimpse of the beautiful Gaurishankar himal (7134m). It has the second highest peak in the Rolwaling range after Melungtse(7181m). The view was mesmerizing. We had our cameras and photos ready and we spent some time clicking pictures of Gaurishankar. We could see the raging Rolwaling river below the suspension bridge it was such a lovely view and I felt good to be in the Nature. From the suspension bridge it was few hours steep uphill and was comfortable walk to Beding(3693m). Beding was a beautiful place with some beautiful monasteries. Rolwaling River flows just from its side. I had lunch at one of the local lodges in Beding. The lunch was by far the most delicious on the whole route for this trek. It was around 1230 when I was in Beding.
After lunch we further trek to Naa Village as it was only 3 hours from Beding.
We reached Na Gaon(4183m) around 430 in the evening. There were clouds already building up hence the trail ahead was not clear. We had to trek through the foggy climate. Once in Naa Village we checked in to one of the local Lodge sipped warm local butter tea and had warm dinner.
7 October, 2021 – Na-Tsho Rolpa Dudh Kunda -Naa Village. Approx 2 hours to Tshorolpa and additional 5 hours to Dudhkunda and back to Naa Village
Today we woke up early as we decided to head on our final destination to Tsho Rolpa It took us around 2 and half hours to Tso Rolpa. The first hour of walk is very flat comfortable walk with view of mountains such as Chekkigo. We spent around 45 minutes enjoying the breathtaking view of the Lake and surrounding Mountains. The moment I saw in the Lake, I couldn’t control my feelings. Emotions were flowing through me and I was having goosebumps and it felt real to be exploring the remote places in the mountains.
From Tso Rolpa, we decided to continue our trek further to Dudhkunda. (approx. 4900 m). Since there was different route to Dudhkunda, we decided to take a short cut route through the deep valleys and origin of Rolwaling river. The short cut walk to dudhkunda was very tiring and was through steep rocks and we need to cross the rolwaing river. It really was difficult and adventurous. Once in Dudh kunda we freshed up with the chilling water of the Kunda itself and we had our packed lunch carried from the lodge. The dudhkunda lake was a religious lake with a Chorten and lots of prayer flags hanging by the local villagers from Naa. People come to worship and pray during one of the festivals in every calender year.
We arrived back to Naa village around 5 pm in the evening. We had our walk dinner at the lodge chitchatiing with the owner of the lodge and had our good nights sleep.
8 October, 2021 – Naa Village – Chet Chet – 10 hrs trek
After and early breakfast, we started trekking back down to Beding. Since our aim to reach tso rolpa lake was covered we decided to trek down for longer hours so that we can save a day to reach Kathmandu. We trekked down to beding in aound 1 and half hours. We met few locals had tea and then visited Monastery in Beding. We did donate few for the wellbeing of the monastery. Visiting monastery brough us peace and gave us strength to walk back further down to Chet Chet. The route is the same trail that you have climbed before already so you can calculate the amount of the time and the speed that you require to reach your destination. The walk will be pretty easy for you since you just have to walk down the same route and the walk to chet chet for the last day at the Rolwaling Valley.
